Since qualifying in 1995 Ian has practised as a successful litigation and dispute resolution solicitor. He is best known for his legal representation of vulnerable adults in mental capacity litigation and for financial recovery claims after exploitation or financial abuse.
Much of Ian’s work is undertaken in the specialist jurisdiction of the Court of Protection, which is empowered to make decisions about and on behalf of people who otherwise lack the mental capacity to do so themselves. He works very closely with the leading adult safeguarding charity, Action on Elder Abuse, to whom he provides regular assistance, training and advice.
Ian also undertakes risk management and advisory work for the care home and domiciliary care sectors and for local authority safeguarding teams, and regularly speaks at events on issues such as mental capacity and the law. Ian also undertakes County Court and High Court litigation, principally in the areas of breach of contract, breaches of legal duty and compensation for professional negligence.
What Others Say
My expectations of a quality service were high and you have met these high standards. I would recommend, without hesitation, Ian Cranefield in his specialist area of the protection of vulnerable adults.
Mrs SG, West Yorkshire
Clear and very helpful advice given. Appointment time used constructively. Good rapport and relationship built. Costs regularly updated with accurate estimates given.
[Richard Nelson LLP] were able to offer a solicitor experienced in the matter we were dealing with. We received very succinct and reassuring advice regarding a difficult, distressing and protracted dispute.
From our first meeting Ian showed consideration and gave good advice in lay terms, always making sure I understood the risks of success or failure. I could only give 10/10.

Ian Cranefield has been superb throughout the months of handling my case. His style of approach and reassuringly clear explanations at every stage made an otherwise highly stressful experience possible to endure. He enabled me to make balanced judgements of my own, while others may not have instilled such a high degree of trust. I am sure that his quiet but assertive style will have left those representing my opponent in no doubt that they were dealing with the best...
Mrs JW, France
Ian Cranefield’s knowledge of the law in the area of Elderly Abuse has stopped nothing short of saving my elderly mother. We found Ian through ‘Action Against Elderly Abuse’ after being previously advised that mum’s case was "insurmountable". Ian’s expertise proved that it was anything but! He was excellent with my mum, always addressing questions to her, checking she had an understanding and that she was happy with all he proposed. Ian secured a settlement for my mum that we had begun to worry was never going to be attainable. She is now financially independent again and can put this stressful time behind her. We can not thank him enough. We will always remember and be grateful for everything he has done.
Thanks so much for persevering with this, sticking with me until the bitter end and generally being a lawyer standing out from the crowd. I don’t want to embarrass you but it should be said and I mean it. You have integrity which seems to be forgotten by some lawyers and I have some experience to judge with.
