When considering whether to instruct a solicitor to deal with the divorce on your behalf, one of the main hurdles clients are most worried about is the cost.

Eligibility for Legal Aid to cover the cost of divorce

You are only entitled to Legal Aid to financially support you through the process if you meet the financial eligibility criteria and you have sought or obtained third party professional advice regarding domestic abuse. If you are unable to satisfy both, then you will not be able to obtain Legal Aid and will have to fund the proceedings yourself.

How much does a divorce cost in the UK?

If you are the person wishing to commence the divorce, known as the Petitioner, your legal charges and expenses are likely to be in the region of £600 + VAT and the Court fee of £550.

If you are the person responding to the divorce, known as the Respondent, then your legal charges and expenses are significantly less and usually around £400 + VAT.

Financial assistance to cover divorce costs

Although Legal Aid may not be available to you, the Court does still offer financial assistance with regards to their fees if you are of a low income and/or have minimal savings. You can find out if you would be eligible for some financial assistance from the Court in respect of their fee of £550 by visiting the government website.

Hidden divorce costs

The costs outlined in this video are in respect of the divorce process only. If there are children or financial matters to be resolved, such fees will be payable in addition to those previously mentioned.
