Bespoke & Remote Wills During COVID-19

During these uncertain times, many people are understandably anxious to prepare their Will but with social distancing restrictions feel compelled to select remote ways to do so. However, there are real dangers in resorting to the compromise of homemade, ‘one size fits all’ online or free will services that can be unregulated and will most likely lead to difficulties later for your loved ones.

Making or updating a Will remotely doesn’t mean you have to compromise on quality. Our ‘Bespoke and Remote’ service ensures that it is still straightforward for a solicitor to draft or update your Will to ensure you protect your assets and your loved ones are looked after in the event of your death.

The operation of a remote service is not entirely new for many of our nationwide clients who don’t live near to our regional offices or network of consultants and opt for a remote experience. However, during the pandemic, this service has been an increasingly popular way for clients to make their Wills without compromising on quality.

How does making a remote Will work?

After making initial contact, our bespoke service follows a simple process:

  1. We make good use of efficient and reliable technological processes. We send a simple questionnaire to you electronically to collect initial information and understand your aspirations. We can also send our client retainer documents to you which you can sign and return to us electronically. We also carry out online ID checks remotely, which negates any need for you to post documents to us.
  2. Having analysed your questionnaires, we will arrange for a solicitor to telephone or video call at a time convenient to you to talk through your options and preferences and offer you our advice and recommendations, as you would expect during a normal solicitor-client consultation.
  3. When your instructions are understood, your solicitor will draft your Will and send it to you electronically – or by post if you prefer – with an explanatory letter confirming your instructions, our advice and explaining the content of the draft Will clause by clause. Of course, if you have any questions or wish to make any amendments to the draft Will you can email us or we can have another consultation to discuss them.
  4. Once the content of your Will is finalised, we then prepare an engrossed copy which we post to you with full instructions about how to sign your Will. We invite you to scan a copy of the signed Will to us immediately it is signed so we can check it has been executed correctly and then, of course, you can send the original to us for storage which is included in the service, if you wish.

We are on the end of a phone, email or video conference throughout to provide any support, advice and guidance you need.

Remote Wills should not compromise quality

Although it is second nature to us to provide a first-class service which is bespoke and remote, we understand that some clients may feel sceptical and worry that dealing at a distance means compromising on quality. We can assure you that this is not the case – but don’t take our word for it. This is what one of our clients had to say about their recent Bespoke & Remote Will service:

“A simple phone call started the process. Our service was completed during the pandemic. The working from home environment did not hinder the process, in fact, we were put in contact with a specialist solicitor who resides in a different city to us but who could act swiftly and proficiently, maintaining the same standard of service as if we had met face to face. We have already recommended Kerry Wigg to a family member. She is friendly, professional, detailed and made all the jargon easy to understand. This is exactly what we wanted and needed – Thank you!”

Please do not put off making your Will until ‘tomorrow’ because of the logistical challenges you think may be posed by the pandemic.
