Association of British Dispensing Opticians

ABDO was formed in 1986 with the merger of The Association of Dispensing Opticians and the Faculty of Dispensing Opticians. The profession of dispensing opticians has been regulated voluntarily since 1926 and, as a statutory profession, by the Opticians Act since 1958.

The Advice and Guidelines can be found at the ABDO web site and are issued in pursuance of the Association’s objectives in maintaining for the public benefit the highest standards of professional competence and conduct.

Section 1 of the Advice and Guidelines deals with professional conduct, including, inter alia:

  • Registration and Enrolment
  • Continuing Education and Professional Development
  • Indemnity Insurance, and
  • Supervision of Trainees
