College of Optomitrists

The College of Optomitrists produce their own Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct which can be found on their web site. These Guidelines are continually reviewed and include advice relating to the fitting and supply of contact lenses, providing clarification on the responsibilities of a registered optometrist “generally directing” the sale or supply of contact lenses and on the duty to provide aftercare.

These guidelines are referred to by the General Optical Council in elation to their own rules and standards.

In addition to this general guidance, the College also provides specific guidance on a number of topics, including:

  • Guidance for optometrist prescribers
  • Patient Information and Consent
  • Guidance on the Disposal of Waste, and
  • Infection Control

all of which can be found on their web site on the Publications web page.
