Matthew Elkins

Consultant Solicitor

Matt gained a Masters in International Law from the University of Essex before completing his Legal Practice Course, obtaining a Distinction, at the College of Law. He joined us in 2013, having previously been a partner in a niche criminal defence firm in the City.

Matt defends the full range of criminal cases, with particular experience of defending large-scale and complex drugs conspiracy, money laundering allegations, MHRA investigations, complex confiscation hearings and managing restraint orders. He has defended a number of complex international fraud allegations prosecuted by the SFO and the FCA. Additionally Matt has a specialism in defending animal welfare matters and allegations of cruelty and neglect, with knowledge of the law on the trade in endangered species (CITES and COTES). He can represent clients seeking the return of confiscated specimens by the UKBA.

Matt is experienced in defending civil fraud actions brought against company officers where misfeasance and fraudulent or wrongful trading are alleged as well as defending directors against Insolvency Service investigations and petitions to disqualify.

Matt has extensive experience of issuing Judicial Review proceedings against the Police and Courts and is often instructed to challenge unfairly issued Police cautions, to get them removed from a client’s record. He recently co-authored an article published in the Criminal Law Review (the leading criminal law journal) on procedural reforms to the Police cautioning regime and writes the UK Westlaw Insight on Police Cautions.

What Others Say

From the moment Matt agreed to represent me, we all felt like someone was finally fighting my corner. Matt displayed a perfect balance between professionalism, friendship and honour.

Teacher - Caution Removal

I had three previous lawyers in the space of six months. I was not happy with the representation on each of those occasions. We finally found Matthew Elkins at Richard Nelson LLP who was on a different level. Always contactable and highly knowledgeable on both civil and criminal law. I would highly recommend Mr Elkins to anyone being investigated/charged by organisations such as BIS or the CPS.
