UK Enforces Mandatory ETA for Visa-Free Travel
The Home Office initially introduced ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) documents in 2023 for overseas residents to travel to the UK. It was not mandatory for all countries to apply for one upon travel to the UK; however, from 25 February 2026, the Home Office have made ETA documents mandatory for all visitors travelling to the UK.
What is an ETA?
An Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital permission to travel. It is not a visa or a tax, nor does it permit entry to the UK. It is merely a document that authorises a person to travel.

Who needs one to travel?
ETAs are mandatory for visitors who travel to the UK to take connecting flights and go through passport control. Visitors to the UK need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) if they do not need a visa for short stays of up to six months, or do not already have a UK immigration status. Visitors from 85 nationalities, including nationals of the United States, Canada and France, are now legally required to have an ETA when travelling to the UK.
Airlines will prevent passengers from boarding if they do not have an ETA, eVisa or other valid documentation.
Do British and Irish citizens, including dual citizens, need an ETA?
British and Irish citizens, including dual citizens, are exempt from needing an ETA but must present either a valid British passport or a Certificate of Entitlement when travelling to the UK.

What do they cost?
An ETA currently costs £20, and you can apply via the “UK ETA App”; further information can be found on GOV.UK.
It is recommended that applicants apply within 3 working days of their travel to ensure enough time for the Home Office to make a decision.
What documents do I need to apply?
To apply for an ETA, individuals need to:

- Provide contact and passport details;
- Provide a valid photo, complying with the rules for digital photos;
- Answer a set of suitability and criminality questions.
Individuals must travel with the same passport they used when applying for their ETA.
How long does it last?
The ETA visa, once granted, lasts for 2 years or until the holder’s passport expires – whichever is sooner. It permits multiple journeys.
