British citizenship and settlement in the UK are considered the final stage for many migrants who come to the UK, giving you the right to live and work in the UK permanently without any Immigration restrictions. You may wish to make the UK your permanent home with your family after investing many years here. You will require British Citizenship before you apply for a UK passport.
In some cases, individuals are British automatically, and will not need to apply for British citizenship. We can review your case and provide expert advice regarding the requirements.
Our team of citizenship solicitors provides legal advice and assistance for all British citizenship applications. The requirements for these applications are restrictive and can be complex to navigate through and our friendly and experienced team will make sure you are supported throughout the process. Naturalisation
To secure citizenship in the UK the process is to apply for Naturalisation and satisfy the eligibility rules. The applicant must demonstrate that they have lived in the UK for 5 years and have secured indefinite leave to remain (ILR ) in the UK, or secured “settled status” (under the EU scheme) or had been granted indefinite leave to enter the UK. The application can be lodged after securing the ILR for 12 months.
If the applicant is married to a British citizen and secured the ILR they do not need to wait for 12 months to apply.
Registration of children
To secure British citizenship for a child under the age of 18 years, an application to register them as a British citizen can be lodged with the Home Office.
The nationality laws are complex, and applicants may be eligible to apply either by way of an entitlement or on a discretionary basis.
Registration of children in Local Authority
Our citizenship solicitors take regular instructions from Local Authorities to assist with registration applications for young people in care, for whom we provide expert legal advice.
Automatic acquisition
Automatic acquisition of British citizenship is when applicants automatically acquire British Citizenship by law without having to lodge a prescribed application.
Individual applications and specific circumstances are considered with these applications and an assessment must be undertaken to check the eligibility rules and requirements.
Hong Kong British National (Overseas) (BN(O) Visa
The Hong Kong BN(O) route allows BN(O) status holders and certain family members to live, work and study in the UK. After 5 years, applicants will be able to apply for settlement, and after a further year, British citizenship, providing they meet the validity, suitability and eligibility requirements.
