What constitutes workplace bullying or harassment?
Bullying and harassment can take the form of words, silence, mistreatment or, in what can often be the worst cases, physical contact. It does not have to take place face to face. Bullying and harassment can take place by email or text message.
Workplace bullying will often have a real impact on your ability to carry out and improve in your job. Denial of training opportunities, unfair treatment and regularly being undermined are all examples of bullying.
Harassment is when bullying becomes illegal. It usually occurs when bullying is related to age, sex, gender, religion or other discriminatory categories.

Resolving bullying and harassment
There is no definitive way to approach workplace bullying or harassment. Each case is different but here a few general points:
- Try to resolve things informally with the person bullying and harassing you. Make it clear that you do not find their conduct acceptable.
- Get support from a work colleague, someone you can confide in.
- Does your employer have a harassment policy – get a copy and find out what you should do if you think you are being harassed or bullied?
- If you cannot resolve things informally, or you do not feel able to do so, think about using your employer’s grievance procedure and/or harassment policy.
